To Know

To Know “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through His spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” {Ephesians 3:16-19 NIV}

His prayer was that they might know the fullness of the love of God for them. He prayed power for them to be able to hold on and understand, down to the depths of their souls, how big God loves them. Because you can’t just know about this love, to grasp it, to hold and let it take hold of you is unraveling.

To understand this love, to know it, requires power we don’t have, it takes a work of the Spirit to unveil how strong, powerful and forever this love is. And were we to take hold of it, to know it in our bones, it would then fill us and completely transform us. It would shape our life, our thoughts, our relationships, our perspective.

To know that which surpasses knowledge is to know the things of God that seem to make no sense. It is to take hold of the wisdom of the cross, that displays his love most fully as Jesus, the one who sat in the highest place, took himself to the lowest place, that through him, each person to the farthest reaches of humanity would know that God is for them. That there was nothing they could do to remove his love for them, because the saving work of the cross is permanent, forever fixed in order to eternally save any who call on his name.

Then to be filled with the measure of all of Him, is to no longer count my own measure of goodness, but to take hold of the depth of his grace and mercy, to be filled with a rich love for people that he so deeply loves. And he who cannot be measured, will not run out of love for me.

This Treasure of Grace

Flower Gift“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of god – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” {Ephesians 2:8-10 NIV}

We are not saved by them, but we are made for them. Our hearts long to do good work. To work in line with the purposes created within us that stir us to good action. That which calls us to stand on behalf of the homeless, the oppressed, the refugee, the broken. The calling to love and bring blessing to others, to give kindness and mercy to those who may even have hurt us, to give generously. To walk beside friends and family cheering them on as they run their race, to encourage and build others up so that they can be all they were made to be. To bring peace and joy to those we meet and are yet to meet, to offer shelter and exuberant hospitality.

All from a  gift. Given because the one who made us is good. This gift of Jesus that was completely His doing and not my own. This treasure of grace that says, you can be friends with the one whom your soul longs for, there is nothing that can be done to earn it, to him this faith, this relationship is a gift and it is completely from him. And yet this beautiful salvation gift, not only saves me for life forever with him, but is the very thing that stands my heart, my mind and my courage to attention. Help and grace are needed. He calls this beautiful action, as we see others in need, stirring our hearts as he is stirred. Positioning his people to be his bearers of grace.

As we live close to the one who is good, we are made strong to live a life that brings honor to him.  As we draw close to Him, knowing more of Him and every great thing He has done, good works become an outpouring in our life in the strength of the Spirit.

Through The Church

Let The Church

“His intent was that now , through the church,  the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.”

Ephesians 3:10-12 {NIV}

This image of the church speaks deeply to my heart. The intent of God and his heart for the church that she would display his MANIFOLD wisdom. His deep, wide, over and beyond wisdom of the ages. He would choose the church to be the one to preach, display, embody and make known his wisdom. He chose the church, the messy, imperfect, beautiful church. 

She not only gets to make known his wisdom on earth to all people, but the church preaches, makes known, displays his MANIFOLD wisdom to the heavenly courts. She is on display and through her he shows his wisdom. This was not his wisdom that was reacting to a problem. No, this was wisdom of ages past, eternally thought through, planned and purposed before the first creation breath. He chose her, he loves her, he purposed her to display his beautiful and perfect wisdom.

She can display his wisdom because it was accomplished in Christ. Jesus is the manifold wisdom of God. The church displays and makes known Jesus’ rule and reign, that is her mandate, her calling.

She makes known his grace that says there is none so far that God will not draw near, there is none so broken that he cannot heal, none so lost that he cannot find, none so low that he can not lift high, none so far that he can not reach, none so abandoned that he can not love, none so taken that he can not redeem, none so damaged that he can not make new. The love and wisdom of Christ shows that he is not far off, he is close in saving.

It is in Jesus and through faith in Him that we can approach, walk up, be in his presence, speak to and hear from the Creator.

Heaven watches as the Sons and Daughters of God {the church} draw near to Him, they watch and marvel at the story. They look on and see that He brought her in, so that she might know him and the gates to his presence were opened with the sacrifice of Heaven’s King. He then gives her this story to tell, he whispers to her; now what you have seen, what you know, go and tell, I will be ever with you, and the court of heaven watches as she displays all that has been given to her in Jesus.
